Why Students Lose Marks in Biology
The most common pattern among A-Level Biology students who underperform relative to their knowledge is imprecision. Biology mark schemes reward specific, technical language — and penalise vague approximations.
"The cell gets bigger" ≠ "the cell increases in volume by osmosis"
The second answer earns marks. The first does not.
The Mark Scheme Vocabulary
Build a glossary of precise biological language for each topic. For example:
- Osmosis — movement of water molecules by diffusion from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential through a selectively permeable membrane
- Enzyme specificity — the active site is complementary in shape to the specific substrate
- Natural selection — individuals with favourable heritable variation survive to reproduce and pass on the variation to offspring
Memorise definitions exactly. Mark schemes are often inflexible.
Command Words
Know what each command word is asking:

Six-Mark Questions
For extended response questions, plan before you write. Six marks usually requires three points with two marks each — one for the statement, one for the explanation. Structure matters as much as content.
Use Past Papers as a Training Tool
The most valuable revision activity for A-Level Biology is not reading your notes — it is sitting a past paper question, writing your answer, then comparing it word-by-word with the mark scheme. Note every divergence. This is how you close the gap between knowing the biology and scoring the marks.
