The Scale of the Problem
A-Level Chemistry covers an enormous volume of content: physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry across two years, with substantial mathematical components. Many students underestimate the demand until they sit their first mock.

Break the Spec Into Sections
Download the specification for your exam board (AQA, OCR A/B, or Edexcel) and divide the content into its component parts. Treating the whole A-Level as one undifferentiated mass is overwhelming. Broken into manageable sections, it becomes approachable.
Physical Chemistry: The Maths-Heavy Core
Physical chemistry topics — moles, equilibrium, thermodynamics, kinetics, electrochemistry — require mathematical fluency as well as conceptual understanding. Common weaknesses:
- Mole calculations and limiting reagents
- Equilibrium constants (Kc, Kp)
- Entropy and Gibbs free energy
- pH calculations across different acid/base systems
These repay practice more than reading. Do worked examples, then attempt questions without looking at the method.
Organic Chemistry: Build the Reaction Map
Organic chemistry is best learned as a network of reactions. Draw a reaction map linking functional groups and their interconversions. Being able to navigate from one functional group to another, with conditions and reagents, is the core skill tested in mechanism questions.
Inorganic Chemistry: Systematic Memorisation
Period 3, transition metals, and Group 2/7 properties require systematic learning. Flashcards with patterns and trends work well here — use active recall, not repeated reading.
Use Past Papers Early
Begin past papers much earlier than feels comfortable. Mark them carefully with the mark scheme. Note the specific language the mark scheme uses — chemistry mark schemes reward precise language, and approximations cost marks.
