Building a Tutoring Portfolio From Scratch
Start With What You Have
Your academic results, degree, or teaching qualification are your starting point. Even without tutoring experience, a first-class degree in your subject or a PGCE signals genuine expertise. Present these clearly and confidently.
Offer a Trial Session
A free or discounted first session removes the risk for a new student. It also gives you the chance to demonstrate your value before they have committed. Most students who find the first session useful will continue.
Tutor Friends, Classmates, or Volunteers First
Before seeking paid students, offer a handful of free sessions to friends or family members who need support. This builds practice, confidence, and — if they are willing — testimonials.
Ask Early for Reviews
The moment a student has a positive result — passes a test, understands something they struggled with, achieves a target grade — ask for a review. Do not wait until they leave. "Would you mind leaving a quick review on my Folio Tutors profile? It really helps." Most people who are happy to say yes in the moment follow through if you make it easy.
Document Your Results
Keep a private record of every student you work with and the outcomes you helped them achieve. Grade improvements, successful school admissions, exam passes — these become the evidence base for your profile copy and future marketing.
Stay Active on Your Profile
Tutors who update their profile regularly — refreshing their bio, adding new subjects or levels, responding promptly to enquiries — are ranked more favourably and project an active, professional image to prospective students.
Be Patient and Consistent
Credibility compounds. Your fifth review makes your tenth easier to get. Your tenth makes your twentieth almost automatic. Tutors who stick with it consistently for six months almost always build a sustainable student base.
