GCSE Maths: The Topics That Come Up Most in the Exam

Why Topic Frequency Matters

The GCSE Maths specification contains far more content than can be tested in three exam papers. Certain topics appear in almost every series; others are tested occasionally. Knowing which is which helps you allocate revision time efficiently.

High-Frequency Topics

These topics appear in virtually every GCSE Maths paper and should be prioritised:

• Fractions, decimals, percentages and their conversions
• Ratio and proportion
• Standard form
• Bounds and error intervals

Algebra

• Solving linear and quadratic equations
• Rearranging formulae
• Graphs of linear and quadratic functions
• Sequences (arithmetic and geometric, nth term)

Geometry

• Pythagoras'' theorem
• Trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA)
• Area and perimeter of standard shapes
• Circle theorems (Higher tier)
• Vectors (Higher tier)

Statistics and Probability

• Frequency tables and averages
• Scatter diagrams and correlation
• Probability trees and Venn diagrams

Higher Tier Specifics

If you are sitting the Higher tier, additional emphasis should go on:

• Algebraic fractions
• Proof
• Functions and composite functions
• Surds

How to Use Past Papers

Work through at least five to six past papers per exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR — know which one your school uses). Track which topics you lose marks on consistently. These become your priority revision list.

Common Errors to Eliminate

• Sign errors when expanding brackets
• Forgetting units in area and perimeter questions
• Misreading cumulative frequency and box plot scales
• Not showing working — marks are awarded for method, not just the answer
