GCSE Science: How to Tackle Required Practicals
What Are Required Practicals?
Required practicals (sometimes called core practicals) are a set of prescribed experiments that all GCSE Science students must complete during their course. They are then assessed in the written exams — not as a separate practical assessment.
Why Students Lose Marks on Practical Questions
Many students are surprised to find practical questions difficult in the exam. The issue is usually one of two things:
- They completed the practical in class but did not revise it systematically afterwards
- They understand what they did but not why each step matters
Exam questions on required practicals test procedural understanding, analysis of data, and evaluation of errors — not just the ability to follow instructions.
How to Revise Each Practical
For each required practical, know:
- The aim — what question is the experiment trying to answer?
- The variables — independent, dependent, and controlled variables
- The method — key steps, in order, and why each step is necessary
- The equipment — name, purpose, and units for measurement
- Risk assessment — key hazards and precautions
- Analysis — how to process and present results (graphs, calculations)
- Evaluation — sources of error, anomalous results, improvements
Practicals by Subject
Biology: Osmosis in plant tissue, enzyme activity, microscopy, photosynthesis investigations
Chemistry: Titration, rates of reaction, preparation of a salt, electrolysis, chromatography
Physics: I-V characteristics, specific heat capacity, forces and extension (Hooke''s law), radiation
Exam Paper Questions
Past paper questions on practicals often ask for improvements to a described method, or for identification of errors in given data. Practise these question types specifically. The skills transfer across practicals and can be applied even to unfamiliar scenarios.
