How to Choose the Right Tutor for Your Child
Define the Goal First
Before you search, be specific about what you want tutoring to achieve. Options might include:
- Catching up after a difficult term
- Preparing for a specific exam (11+, GCSE, A-Level)
- Addressing a confidence issue in a particular subject
- Providing stretch and challenge beyond school level
A targeted brief produces better matches than "we need a maths tutor."
Credentials and Experience Are Not the Same Thing
A tutor with a first-class maths degree but no experience teaching fourteen-year-olds is not necessarily better than a tutor with a 2:1 and five years of GCSE tutoring behind them. Ask about both, and weight experience with your child''s specific age group and level heavily.
Look for Evidence of Results
Reviews that mention specific outcomes — "our daughter moved from a predicted 4 to a 6 in her GCSE" — are far more valuable than generic praise. Look for patterns across reviews: do multiple parents mention the same strengths?
Request a Trial Session
Most good tutors are happy to offer an initial session at a reduced rate or free of charge. This lets your child meet the tutor, assess the fit, and gives the tutor a chance to assess where your child actually is.
Involve Your Child in the Decision
A tutor your child actively dislikes — however qualified — will not produce good results. After a trial session, ask your child privately: Did you understand things better? Did you feel comfortable? Would you like to continue?
DBS and Safety
For in-person tutoring with a minor, always confirm that the tutor holds a current enhanced DBS certificate. On Folio Tutors, tutors who have been DBS-checked have this clearly indicated on their profile.
