What Feels Productive Is Not Always What Works
Highlighting, rereading notes, and listening to recorded lectures feel like studying. They are passive, they are comfortable, and research consistently shows they are among the least effective revision methods. Here is what actually works.
Active Recall
Testing yourself on material — without looking at your notes — is the single most powerful study technique supported by evidence. It forces your brain to retrieve information, which is the same process as remembering it in an exam.
How to do it: Close your notes and write down everything you can remember about a topic. Then check. Repeat. Use flashcards, past paper questions, or simply blank-page recall.
Spaced Repetition
You forget new information rapidly in the first 24 hours after learning it. Reviewing material at increasing intervals — after one day, then three days, then a week, then a fortnight — combats this and dramatically improves long-term retention.
How to do it: Use a spaced repetition app like Anki, or build a simple review schedule into your revision timetable.
Interleaving
Most students block their revision by topic: all of Chapter 3, then all of Chapter 4. Research shows that mixing topics within a single revision session — interleaving — produces better long-term retention, even though it feels harder in the moment.
Elaborative Interrogation
Ask "why" and "how" questions about the material you are learning. "Why does osmosis work this way?" is more useful than "what is osmosis?" The process of generating explanations deepens understanding and improves memory.
What to Stop Doing
